Scott Morell's 120 gallon Reef

Tank: 120 gallon tall glass establisted in June 1999, with a custom built hood and tank stand made from 100 year old pine by Scott.

Farming Unit: One 23 gallon acrylic tank with approximately 50 frag capacity. It uses four power compact 65 watt bulbs (Actinic 50/50 and 6500K) to provide the lighting . I am planning on replacing them with VHO or NO at a later date. The current is provided by two MaxiJet 1200 pumps and a Rio Seio 820 powerhead. The output of the farming unit flows into the sump.

Sump: One 23 gallon acrylic sump with a single baffle. Mag12 pump returning the water to the main tank.

Water Flow: Closed loop using a Sequence 750 series pump rated at 3800 GPH. With the sump return pump running at 900 gph and the single powerhead left, the total water turnover is 41 times the tank volume per hour.

Fishes: Tomato Clown, Flame Angel, Lawnmower Blenny, Green Chromis, Blue Damsels and one Racoon Butterfly that has wiped out all the Aiptasia, zoanthids, star polyps, and hairy mushrooms.

Stony Corals: Acropora, Montipora Digita, Montipora Capricornus, Hydnaphora, Stylophora, Seriatopora, Pocillipora, Caulastrea and Montastrea.

Soft Corals: Sinularia, Capnella, Xenia, Sarcophyton, Lobophytum, Zoanthids, star polyps, and mushrooms

Other Livestock: Long Spine Sea Urchin, Hermit Crabs, and Snails.

Filtration: Approx. 120 lbs. of man made live rock. The system has a plenum covered with 180 lbs combination of crushed coral, CaribSea Sea Flor Special Grade sand, and GARF Grunge. The system has a EuroReef ES5-3 protein skimmer.

Lighting: 4URI VHO Super Actinic bulbs, 2URI VHO White Actinics, 2URI VHO Aquasun bulbs. I did add two 400 watt Dual-Ended MH 20,000K over the tank but the Lovely and Gracious Monica and I did not care for the looks and did not see any benefit so we removed them.

Water: 20 to 30 gallon water change evey 3 to 4 weeks using RO.DI water and Instant Ocean salt.

Additives: Alternate SeaChem Reef Builder and Advantage calcium each week in the makeup water to maintain alkalinity and calcium. Add SeaChem Reef Plus every once in a while.

Feeding: Golden Pearls, Cyclop-eeze, Flake food and Mysis Shrimp.
