Kevin Day & Kristen Clark's 40 gallon Reef

Tank: 40 gallon glass established in August of 2002 and moved 300 miles in May of 2003. Custom Oak stand. Three sides viewable design. (the short side against the wall, two long sides exposed)

Fishes: Gold Band Maroon Clown, Small yellow tang.

Stony Corals: Acropora Millepora, Acropora Yongei, Montipora Digitata, Acropora Sarmentosa, Caulastrea Furcata, Euphylias Platygira

Soft Corals: Yellow Fiji sarchophyton, frilly mushrooms, zoanthids, green star polyps, pulsing xenia.

Other Livestock: Tridacna Maxima clams, boxer shrimp, peppermint shrimp, crabs, and snails

Filtration: Nautilus TE is used for the skimmer and works like a monster on a tank this small. Approx 40 lbs, of live rock and crushed coral aragonite for the sand bed. There is a lot of macro algae in the sump to provide great filtration.

Lighting: Actinics on at noon, Halide on at 1:00. Halide off at 10:00, Actinics off at 11:00. Sump is lit 24/7

Water Temperature: ~80

Specific Gravity: Varies, but we try to keep it in the 1.022 to 1.026 range

Calcium: typically tests in the 320 range. Will go as high as 400, but only after an enormous water change and a sharp dose of Tech A and B. Drops off in a few days. The SPS soak the stuff up like crazy. We are currently in the market for a calcium reactor.

Water Source: Tap water!! (OH NO!) In all honesty, we used ONLY ro/di in Moscow before the move, and we have seen an enormous increase in growth by switching to tap. Tell me until you’re blue in the face about how bad it is for my tank, I only know what’s working for me.

Salt: Instant Ocean

Additives: Tech A and B, and only because I can’t keep the calcium up. I don’t believe in other additives.

Makeup water: Added daily, otherwise, watch out for the salinity swing.
